Falcon Account: Creating your own password

Rules and restrictions

Most Falcon Account passwords are required to be at least 12 characters in length and will expire after 180 days.  Some are required to be longer and expire more frequently.  More detailed information on the rules and restrictions is available in another article on this site or within the Password Self-Service application when you are using it to change your password.

Setting your password for the first time

First-time account activations/registrations and resetting forgotten passwords (see below) must be done through the Password Self-Service site.  First time activation/registration will also include setting up a set of challenge questions.  Detailed instructions are available to assist with this process.

If you've forgotten your password

If you've forgotten your password, you must use the Password Self-Service site to reset it.

  • The Forgotten Password option provides 3 methods of resetting a forgotten password, depending on what you've set up previously: challenge questions, SMS text message and alternate e-mail.  You can find more details on what each option entails here.
  • If you've not used the Password Self-Service site before, you will need to use the activate/register process to look up your account and register it.  Detailed instructions are available to assist with that process.

If you know your current password

There are several convenient options for you to easily change your password or passphrase:

  • On any computer or mobile device: Visit the Password Self-Service website and log in with your username and password.  While mobile browsing can work, we recommend using a computer's web browser to avoid compatibility issues with the site.
    • You may be prompted to provide profile information including emergency contact number, password reset phone, alternate email and password expiration reminder
    • If it's your first time using the site, you will be prompted to set up challenge questions which are used to verify your identity if you forget your password
    • Password Self-Service will display what your password requirements are (see above).  You can either enter a password of your own choosing or click the link to allow the software to generate a list of suitable possibilities.  You will be required to enter your choice twice to reduce the likelihood of a mistake.
    • When you click "Change Password", your password will be changed and you will be taken to a summary page with commonly used links.
  • Windows PC - university owned while on campus: press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. You will then be given the opportunity to change your password.
  • Macs - university owned while on campus: Macintosh users can change their password while logged in by going to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Change Password.
  • Notification: While on campus, you are presented with a notification 14 days prior to expiration on university-owned computers.  These notifications are presented as pop-ups.
