Wi-Fi router
Residents are not allowed to use a personal router to expand the Wi-Fi network provided in our residence halls. This is a violation of UWRF policy as it reduces the overall quality of Wi-Fi for you and your neighbors.
Personal printers (Use a USB cable to print)
Wi-Fi enabled printers are one of the most common interferers. The "ad-hoc" wireless mode will emulate an access point so your other devices can find and print to your printer. Most printers do not participate in or respect the Internet Wi-Fi network. Turn off the Wi-Fi option on your printer and use a USB cable to print. (Often the "ad-hoc" wireless mode is a separate option from just hitting the Wi-Fi button on the printer. Given that different models have different instructions, try a Google search with your printer model, "Turn off ad-hoc wireless on my printer.")
Smart/“Internet of Things” (IoT) devices
Our WiFi network can support many devices including laptops and gaming consoles. Unfortunately, some types of smart/IoT devices designed for home use will not work, or will not work properly and securely (such as smart light bulbs, Chromecasts* , Google Home and more). Due to the rapidly growing number of devices, DoTS and Residence Life do not have a list of specific devices that are not supported on our network.
*While the casting option for Chromecasts is not supported, Chromecast devices that use apps natively without casting can be connected to the network and used in that manner. Be aware that Google TV's operating system is based on Android. Therefore it may behave like a mobile device and use a Randomized MAC address for each network by default. It is best to turn off "Use randomized MAC" and select "Use device MAC" in order to get your TV connected to the UWRF-Registered network. If you do not have any options or menu available when you select the network, contact DoTS for assistance.
