Email List: Terminology

LISTSERV is the software product family from L-Soft used by UW-River Falls to provide email discussion and announcement list services. While "listserv" or "listserve" is sometimes used to refer to an email list, that is not the correct terminology. Here is a list of terms used in LISTSERV list configurations or messages that may cause confusion:

bounce - error response received when an email delivery problem occurs

catalist - global list catalog shared between organizations running LISTSERV

editor - someone who moderates messages

header - the configuration of an individual email list

keyword - a configuration option identifier used in list configurations

owner - someone who has access to change the configuration of a list
