Cisco IP Phone: Message 9916 - You Are Not Authorized to Dial That Number From This Line

Message 9916 - Your are not authorized to dial that number from this line.

Background

The telephone number that you are attempting to dial is blocked due to the costs that are associated with it being higher than allowed for your profile. International dialing can be enabled upon request per individual. International dialing will not be enabled on "shared lines" and will only be done so on individual "private" lines for accountability. Caller ID does not present internationally, so the presentation of your "private" number should not be a concern.

Examples of Restrictions

  • By default, "office" phones are authorized to allow only continental US (48 states) domestic dialing.
  • Dialing to other US states and territories are not considered domestic dialing.
  • Dialing to Canada is international dialing; they are indeed a different country.
  • International dialing is blocked because of the significant cost per minute to some countries.
  • Calls from "public" use phones where there is no specific person assigned are usually blocked to local dialing only. Some may even be restricted to on-campus only dialing.

Troubleshooting

If you have had international dialing enabled, you may still receive this message if you are not properly dialing. Refer to the International Dialing Instructions article for assistance.
