University Computer: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Workstation Software

How do I request software for my UWRF workstation?

Many commonly requested software applications are available for self-service installation via Software Center. Popular titles include Adobe Creative Suite applications as well as web browsers and plugins. If you require specific software, please see our Knowledge Base article for additional information on software acquisition. These types of purchases must be made through DoTS.

How do I get software updates?

Windows updates are deployed monthly to UWRF workstations via Software Center. Pending updates can be viewed under the Updates tab at the left hand side of the Software Center window. Please note, these updates often contain critical security fixes and are mandatory for all UWRF workstations. New versions of Adobe Flash Player, Java, and other plugins are provided in the Applications section of Software Center for installation/updating at your convenience. Have a question regarding acquiring software updates? Please contact DoTS and we are more than happy to help!

Docking Solutions

What types of docking solutions are on campus?

UWRF utilizes three primary types of docking stations to provide external display, keyboard, and mouse to a laptop. The type of dock depends on the age of the laptop connected to the dock.

Type 1: Dell E-Port Dock

This type of docking station is very common. It fits Dell laptops with an E in the model number (E5430, E5440, E5450, E5470). It provides both power and connectivity when laptops are placed into the docking cradle. The laptop is locked onto the dock and must be ejected before removing the laptop from the dock to prevent damage to the dock or laptop.

Key components of the dock are:

  • Eject button: Indicated by the yellow box in the picture. This releases the laptop from the dock. If this button will not depress, there is a small black switch on the right side of the docking station. Flip the switch to unlock the eject functionality.
  • Power button: Indicated by the red box in the picture. This powers the system up when connected to the docking station. It will also pulse when the system is connected, but in sleep mode.

To undock from this model station, put the laptop to sleep then press the blue eject button to disengage the laptop from the dock.

Type 2: Dell D3100 USB Docking Station

This dock utilizes DisplayLink™ technology to provide external display, as well as functions as a USB-hub for attached USB devices (keyboard, mouse, etc.). Please note: power must be connected to the laptop as well as the USB cable for the dock. This dock does not charge the laptop on its own. To undock, simply unplug the USB cable from the laptop.

Type 3: Dell WD-15 USB-C Docking Station

The WD-15 Type-C docking station is the newest model of dock on campus. It charges and docks compatible laptops with a single cable. Note the power button on the dock, denoted by the red box below. To undock, simply unplug the USB-C cable from the laptop.
