DoTS recommends to not permanently store any data on your UWRF devices including your university-owned computer. There are open record implications. For example, see this Records Management article.
Physical wear and tear is a factor in the life of your hard drive. Similar to most mechanical components, your computer's hard drive will eventually fail. In order to protect yourself from data loss due to hard drive corruption, viruses, theft or accidental deletion, it's critical to set up a working backup solution for your data. It's also important to routinely test your backup solution to ensure data can be recovered.
DoTS does not recover your lost data for you. If data is lost on a university-owned device, DoTS can facilitate recovery options with a 3rd party service. DoTS cannot give a time estimate since the service is provided externally and subject to their service agreements. Also, data recovery can be very expensive. Therefore, DoTS recommends the storage/backup options listed below.

Browser bookmarks/favorites are many times automatically stored on your computer. Remember to
back them up if you don't want to lose them! (Here is information on
how to restore them.)
