Canvas (Instructors): Interactive Video Quizzes Using Kaltura

Kaltura Video Quiz as an Assignment

Kaltura is the video portal for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in Canvas. With it, instructors, students, and staff can easily upload, store, stream, and share (or restrict) videos. Instructors can also add quizzes directly into their videos.

Video content requires Internet bandwidth. This should be considered when requiring student work be completed at home. Rural students may not have reliable Internet connections or they may have bandwidth limitations.

To create an in-video quiz, instructors select an existing Kaltura video of theirs, then use Kaltura's editing features to add multiple choice or text entry questions which will appear during the video. Once an in-video quiz is created, instructors can add an interactive video quiz as an assignment and integrate it directly with Canvas's Assignments and Gradebook.

Creating a Kaltura Video Quiz (Knowledge checks)

When choosing +Add New in My Media, the Video Quiz option allows you to create a quiz that runs alongside a video. After choosing this option, Kaltura prompts you to choose a video already in your My Media or to upload a new video. When you choose the desired video, a new page loads: the Video Quiz editor. In this window you can add questions, change settings and details, and even edit the video.

Using the Editor

Within the Quiz editor section, there are three sub menus: Details, Scores, and Experience. These sub menus allow you to change settings of the quiz. Within the first sub menu you are able to add or change the quiz name, welcome message, allow for question download, and instructions.

The second sub menu is Scores. This allows you to choose whether a student may have multiple attempts, if they can see their scores or not, and whether it will inform them if their answers are correct or incorrect.

The third sub menu is Experience. This allows you to choose whether students will be able to change their answers before the quiz is submitted, whether they will be able to skip questions or not, and if they will be able to use the seek bar to view forward in the video.

Adding Questions

The next feature in this window is the Add a question function. In the video player, you can find the part of the video when you would like to add a question and select the add a question button. A small pop-up appears where you can choose what type of question you would like to add: Multiple Choice, True/False, Reflection Point, or Open-Ended Question.

Multiple Choice

Here you can add a question and 2-4 answers. You can use the arrows in the top left to randomize where the answer is. The light bulb in the top right can be used to add both a Hint and a Why (rationale for the correct answer). The plus in the bottom middle is to add additional possible answers.

True/False

Here you can add a True or False question. You can add the question in the text box. To change whether the answer is true or false, select the red X or green check. The green check will be the answer that is correct. The light bulb at the top also functions the same as in the Multiple Choice questions.

Reflection Point

Here you can add a reflection point. This will automatically pause the video when the question was added and display what you wrote in the text box. The student will be prompted to select continue to continue on with the video.

Open-Ended Question

Here you can add an open-ended question. This will allow the students to write in their answer in their own words. This also allows you to add a Hint or Why using the light bulb in the top right corner.

Important Note: Students are only allowed 270 character responses including spaces.

Finish Editing and Previewing

After you add questions, they will appear on the time line on the bottom of the window along with a question count. Now we can use the eye symbol just beneath the right side of the video player to preview the quiz.

This blue screen is what the students will see. There is a welcome message that can be changed and standard instructions that can be added or left out. If the option to download the questions before viewing is used, the Pre-Test Available option will appear in the top right. This will download the text of each question. Once the student hits Continue, the quiz and video will begin.

Once the student has finished the quiz, they will be asked if they would like to review (if that option has been enabled for this quiz) or if they are ready to submit. Once they submit, they will be able to see their score and see the answers that they got right or wrong (if enabled). Then they may close the quiz.

Adding a Kaltura Video Quiz to an Assignment in Canvas

A Kaltura Video Quiz can be added as an assignment in Canvas. To add a video quiz to an assignment, create a new assignment and change the submission type to External Tool. Then select configure and choose Kaltura Video Quiz from the list. On the next window you have the option to choose a quiz you have already made or create a new one by selecting +Add New. Then finish creating the assignment like a traditional assignment. By adding a Kaltura Video Quiz as an assignment, the quiz is added to the Gradebook like a normal assignment using the scoring scheme as outlined in the Quiz Editor and the Assignment settings.
