University Mac: External Monitors Are Not Displaying

Tags Incident

Issue: I recently updated my macOS (or got a new Mac) and now my external monitors display a black screen. I am using a Dell DisplayLink docking station to connect my Mac to the monitors.

Environment: University-owned Mac, Dell DisplayLink docking station, external monitors

Resolution: Open Macintosh HD | Applications and run DisplayLink Manager. If it is not present or not working, proceeding with the following steps...

  1. Open the Self Service application
  2. Locate Displaylink Manager or Displaylink and select the Install button
  3. Once Displaylink Manager or Displaylink has successfully installed, launch it as you would an app
  4. Displaylink Manager or Displaylink should automatically ask for screen recording permission. If not, you can allow this permission manually:
    • Open System Preferences
    • Select Security & Privacy
    • Go to Privacy
    • Scroll down the menu and select Screen Recording
    • Check the Displaylink Manager or Displaylink box
  5. A dialog box appears asking you to either select "Later" or "Quit Now". Select Later.
  6. Add Displaylink Manager or Displaylink to your login items.
    • Open the Apple menu. From there, select System Preferences, then Users & Groups.
    • Select your user account, then Login Items at the top of the window
    • Select the Add button below the list of items. Then select the Applications folder, then Displaylink Manager or Displaylink, then Add.

The monitors should now be displaying correctly.
