Microsoft 365: OneNote for Windows 10 End-of-Life

The contents of this article are applicable to users of the "OneNote for Windows 10" application on Windows computers.  It is not applicable to users of the "OneNote" application on Windows and macOS.  It is also not applicable to users of OneNote inside of Microsoft Teams, or OneNote online.

What is changing?

Microsoft has announced that the "OneNote for Windows 10" application will be end-of-life in October 2025.  This change coincides with the end of support for Windows 10.  Microsoft recommends that all users of the "OneNote for Windows 10" application migrate to using the "OneNote" application on Windows. Information on determining which application you are using is included for your reference below.

How do I know which version of OneNote I'm using?

The easiest way to tell which version of OneNote you are using is to look in the upper left corner of the application.  If you see a "File" button, you are using the OneNote application that is not being discontinued.  If you do not see a "File" button, you are using OneNote for Windows 10 and need to take action to migrate to OneNote.

The title bar of the retiring application also shows the text "OneNote for Windows 10".

What do I need to do?

Open your existing notebooks in the "OneNote" application rather than the "OneNote for Windows 10" application.  Notebooks are compatible across versions, and there is no conversion process required.  Once you've opened your notebooks in the "OneNote" application, right-click on the "OneNote for Windows 10" application in your Start Menu and click "Uninstall" to prevent confusion.

What if I have questions?
