eduroam: Connecting Windows Devices

How to connect to the eduroam network.

1. Select the wireless network icon on the taskbar (typically lower right hand corner of screen)
2. Select the eduroam network and select connect.
3. Once the dialog box closes, Windows prompts you that Additional information is needed to connect to eduroam. Select this notification balloon.
4. Enter your UWRF email address (example@uwrf.edu) and password to authenticate to the network.
5. Once your credentials have been entered, Windows attempts to connect to the eduroam network. Once authentication has succeeded, a Connected status is shown under the Wireless Network Connection section of the network system tray of the Windows toolbar.

How to connect to the eduroam network.

1. Press WINDOWS+S on your computer to open the search window.  Type "network" to search for the network settings application
2. Choose the manually connect to a wireless network option and then click Next to proceed.
3. In the network name box, enter "eduroam", choose WPA-2-Enterprise for the security type, and select continue to the next window.
4. Do NOT click close!  Instead, first select Change connection settings to open setting panel for this connection.
5. Select the Security tab and verify the settings match. Then select Settings next to the Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) drop down box. A Protected EAP Properties dialog opens. Select Configure... in that box to open another dialog box. Verify that the check box in front of Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) is NOT checked. Then select OK on the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties box, select OK on the Protected EAP Properties box, and do NOT select OK on the eduroam Wireless Network Properties box.
6. Select the Advanced settings button in the eduroam Wireless Network Properties box to open the advanced settings dialog box. In the advanced settings box, check the Specify authentication mode box and change the mode to User authentication. Then select OK once to return to the eduroam Wireless Network Properties dialog box.
7. Select OK on the eduroam Wireless Network Properties box and then select OK on the Manually connect to a wireless network box. This returns you to your Windows desktop where you will see your taskbar.
8. On the taskbar near your clock, there is a "signal strength" meter that shows your Wi-Fi connection status. Select the icon to open the Wi-Fi networks panel. Select eduroam, check the Connect automatically check box, and select Connect to begin the connection process.
9. Enter your UWRF email address and your Falcon Account password and select OK. Remember to change your password here when your Falcon Account password changes.
10. Acknowledge the security warning. Remember that you will not find eduroam at a public café or other non-institutional setting. It is easy for someone to set up their own network and spoof eduroam so be careful when you agree to connecting to networks you don't know. Select Connect to finalize the connection.
11. Once connected, you have access to the Internet.

Possible Errors

• You must use your email address and associated password. Your UWRF Falcon Account username does not work across the eduroam systems.
• If you try to connect to the eduroam network before doing these configurations, you will get an error. All steps listed above are the bare minimum needed to get connected.

Starting Over

If you make a mistake or miss a step, in Windows 8 the process is likely easier if you just start over. It is difficult to get at all of the settings through the prompts after the initial setup. You can easily remove the eduroam network with this one command shown below.

Open a command prompt window (press WINDOWS+R then type cmd and press enter)

Type this command: netsh wlan delete profile eduroam

You should see as a result: Profile "eduroam" is deleted from interface "Wi-Fi".
