Canvas (Instructors): Enabling Respondus LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. It prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Canvas quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, students will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Canvas quizzes and exams.

To use LockDown Browser in Canvas

  1. Log into Canvas
  2. From your Dashboard, select the Course Card
  3. In the course, select Settings in the Course Navigation

Add to a Quiz

To use LockDown Browser with a quiz, create the quiz and then select the LockDown Browser link. There you will see a list of quizzes and exams and can enable the tool for the quizzes individually.

When your student selects the quiz, they will see a dialogue box to download LockDown Browser. Once they have it downloaded, they will open LockDown Browser and enter Canvas from the special browser which will take them to their dashboard and the course cards that have the quizzes available for LockDown Browser.

Copy LockDown Browser Material to the Course

To give students the ability to download LockDown Browser anytime during the semester, we have created a “Practice Quiz” which can be copied to your course. This creates the opportunity in advance for students to get LockDown Browser and troubleshoot, etc. before the actual date of an exam. These have been put together in a module in Canvas along with additional guides for instructors and students to help when using LockDown Browser. Please indicate if you would like this module to be copied to your course.
