To help with your part of the university mission, you have been issued a new iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) device. iOS devices are considered auxiliary computing devices and are not on a rotation schedule.
This article is for iPads assigned to individuals. If this device is assigned to a group, it should have already been set up and you can skip the steps below.
This article assumes some experience with iOS. If you’re unfamiliar with iOS (you don’t know how to activate airplane mode for example), contact DoTS to schedule a setup appointment.
Your Falcon Account credentials work as a university Apple ID. Use your @uwrf.edu email and Falcon Account password when prompted. If you have a university Apple ID not using your university email address, contact DoTS. Using personal Apple IDs is not recommended.
iPads click when virtual keyboards are tapped during setup. If you aren't in a private office, plug in headphones or a Lightning audio adapter to suppress this.
Initial Setup
- Turn on the iOS device. With the screen facing you, the power button is on the upper left corner of iPads and upper right side of iPhones. You will be greeted by a white screen with a multilingual Hello. Press the home button, then pick a language and country.
- Tap “Set up manually” in the setup screens. It doesn't take too long. To avoid issues with blurring work and personal resources, it generally isn't a good idea to use the Quick Start with a personal device.
- Use eduroam for the wireless network when prompted. Enter your UWRF email address for the eduroam username. Trust
ise-pol.servers.uwrf.edu when prompted.
- Use your Falcon Account username in the Remote Management prompt. If you don't see a reference to UW-River Falls on the setup screens, contact DoTS.
PINs
A PIN is required on all individually assigned iOS devices. The PIN is rotated annually and can’t use repeating or patterned numbers. The standard length is six digits but you can also use alphanumeric codes if you don't mind typing them in. Configuring Touch ID or Face ID in Settings can drastically reduce the number of times you have to enter the PIN.

Location Services
Choose "Enable Location Services" in the setup screens when prompted. Otherwise the clock will be wrong. You are prompted before the iPad uses location services for things beyond OS services.
Self Service
Self Service is the way you get apps on university iOS devices. Use it instead of the App Store. It doesn't require payment information. There is often a few minutes delay between tapping install and the app appearing on the device.
Email and Calendar
Outlook is now the recommended email and calendar client but built-in ones will work as well. The Outlook app should automatically install within a few minutes of setup. If not, you can request it via Self Service. Open it and follow the prompts to configure it.
Alternately, to configure the built-in clients:
- Tap Settings, then Password & Accounts, and Add Account.
- For account type, choose Exchange.
- Enter your university email address. Description can be anything you like, but DoTS recommends "UWRF Office365"
- When prompted, tap "Sign In".
- Enter your credentials. Saving the password is at your discretion.
- Accept the access requested.
- The final switch panel is for what features you want to use. It is again at your discretion. All will inter-operate with your UWRF account.
- Tap Save. Your email and calendar appointments will start appearing shortly.
Duo Mobile
The Duo Authenticator client is automatically installed on individually-assigned iOS devices since they can be used as an authentication factor. Start on a desktop computer and refer to the Duo setup article. Using it is much faster than a phone call, particularly if you setup Touch ID or Face ID on the device. When adding this device to DUO, choose "Tablet" even if it is an iPhone.
Touch & Face ID
TouchID or FaceID is available on all recently issued UWRF iOS devices. Initial setup of it is skipped to speed the process but you can set it up anytime in Settings.
