Issue: I live in a residence hall and I want to use a wired Internet connection in my room. Can I get the Ethernet port activated?
Environment: Residence Hall, Dorm Room, Student
Answer:
Ethernet availability in the dorm rooms is not a guaranteed service. It is a built in feature of the model of the wireless access points we have deployed. It is only provided as an alternative to wireless in those rooms where the wireless access points have been installed. Wireless access points will not be added to rooms for this purpose of providing a wired connection. Ethernet cables will not be provided and are available at most large retail stores or on-line vendors.
Network jacks in rooms without a wireless access point are not available to be activated for wired service.
Connecting any kind of router or switch is not allowed and may result in the loss of wired service.
There are three active ports on each wireless access point. When facing the wireless access point they will be the first three ports from the right. Connect the Ethernet cable with the clip facing out towards you. There is no need to register the Ethernet MAC address for wired access.
