Network: Can I activate the Ethernet port in my room?

Summary

No, but wireless access is available.

Body

Issue: I live in a residence hall and I want to use a wired Internet connection in my room. Can I get the Ethernet port activated?

Environment: Residence Hall, Dorm Room, Student

Answer:

It is not possible to activate the Ethernet port on the network jacks in residence hall rooms.

We are currently in a test phase of activating the Ethernet ports in rooms that have a wireless access point. If you do not have a wireless access point in your room, then Ethernet will not be available. Current testing areas are limited to these floors:

  • Hathorn Basement, Ground, 1st
  • May 1st, 2nd, 3rd
  • McMillan 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
  • Parker 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
  • Stratton 1st

Connecting any kind of router or switch is not allowed and may result in the loss of service.

Ports 1 & 2 will be the only active ports available to use. When facing the wireless access point they will be the first two ports from the right. Connect the Ethernet cable with the clip facing out towards you. There is no need to register the Ethernet MAC address for wired access.
