Canvas (Instructors): Turnitin

Turnitin.com and Turnitin's Originality Check tool in Canvas allow instructors to check student-submitted essays against a database of existing journals, books, and other written materials (both published and submitted by students).

Using Turnitin in Canvas as an Instructor

In the course in Canvas, do the following:

  1. Select Assignments in the course navigation
  2. Select + Assignment
  3. Name the assignment and add assignment details
  4. Under Submission Type, choose External Tool
  5. Select the Find button and scroll down to Turnitin. Select Turnitin.
  6. Select

Turnitin is now activated on that assignment once you save the assignment.

If the assignment already exists and there have been no student submissions do the following:

  1. Open the assignment
  2. Select Edit
  3. Under Submission Type, choose External Tool
  4. Select the Find button and scroll down to Turnitin. Select Turnitin.
  5. Select

Note:  If students have already submitted assignments, they will not be run against Turnitin and they need to resubmit. Any submissions uploaded after you have enabled it will be scanned.
